Most web hosts out on the internet give you the ability to create a website using their proprietary template-based website building software. This can be a great tool for putting up a quick website in lieu of a fully-functional custom built one. But don’t fall into the trap of thinking your simple, easy-to-put-together temporary site is good enough for the long haul. There are a few drawbacks to making a template-based site the online representation of your company.
When you use a simple website builder, you are only given a limited number of options as to how your website will look. We’ve actually encountered 2 websites that looked identical (save for the name of the company), and the kicker is that they were in the same industry, in the same city! Same stock photos and same template. You want your website to stand out and be recognizable as your own. When a potential client goes to your website, they need to know they are in the right place.
As I mentioned earlier, website builders can provide you with a temporary residence for your business on the web. Another downside of using them as a long term solution is that the hosting company or service that provides the website builder owns it. Your website that you spent hours creating, is not your property. If you ever decide to change hosts or get out of paying a monthly service charge, you cannot take your website with you. It will have to be remade from scratch and more than likely would not look anything like the original. When you purchase a custom built website, you own it and can transfer it between hosts and never lose any functionality or features of your site.
If you currently have a website that is template based, you should know this all too well. Templates are just that. There is no room for making pictures bigger, adding text where necessary, or even adding multiple pages (some templates only allow 5 pages). Don’t settle on your website design. It’s a direct representation of your business and if it’s not exactly how you want it, then you shouldn’t have to settle for second best.

So, let’s face it. Our carpets are dirty. I’m sure there’s a study out there that shows the percentage of allergies caused by them. You walk on your carpet after walking outside, in the grass, up the stairs, through the parking lot. Just think about everything you stepped in and now it’s in your carpet. Kids play, dogs roll around, food is spilled, all on your carpet. Sure, you can vacuum and get the crumbs and dirt off of the top of your floors, but that doesn’t even touch the stuff that’s been pushed deep into the fibers. That’s when you need Compton’s Carpet to come out and clean them for you. They have special machines that deep clean your carpets and bring it back as close to new as possible. Even in the event that you have a water leak and your carpet is soaked, they can get the water out and restore your carpets. They can even clean and sanitize your hard wood floors and clean the tile and grout lines on your bathroom and kitchen floors. Compton’s is also a certified fire and smoke restoration expert. They can help you return your home and furnishings to a “pre-loss” condition. If that’s not enough, they can also clean that mattress you’ve had for years, rugs, drapes, air ducts and much more! Give them a call today and get the dirt out.
Finding a good, trustworthy company to invite into your house and work on your roof is an undertaking. So many roofing companies cut corners, use unskilled workers and leave a job site dirty. Luckily enough, there’s SuperRoofman.com. Davis General Contractors is consistently on the Good Contractor’s list and an Angie’s List award winner. Check out their new website and see what sets them apart from the rest.
One of the questions I get asked on a regular basis is “What’s the difference between a Facebook personal page and a business page?”. A lot, actually. If you are representing your business with a personal profile, you are missing out on some very helpful features that are designed with businesses in mind.
Here are some of the features:
- There is no limit to the number of fans your business page can have. Personal pages have a limit of 5,000 friends.
- They are indexed by search engines. Search for any company on your favorite search engine and within the top 2-3 results will be that business’ fan page. Personal pages are not indexed by search engines.
- One of the most powerful features of a fan page are the Insights. You can get information on your followers, such as: how many people saw your last post, the best time to post an update, your most successful post types, and much more. Personal pages have no such analytics.
- People can check in to your business with a fan page. No such luck with personal pages.
It’s also important to remember that a fan page cannot become friends with any profile, “like” a fan page or follow anyone. You can also host contests and events, and advertise on fan pages using the tabs and third party apps. You cannot advertise a personal page or post, these must be done with a fan page. To take advantage of fan building, post and follower analytics, it’s in your best interest to create a fan page for your business.

If you’re in need of a specialty flashlight, KDlights is the place to get it. They carry some of the most durable flashlights in the world. We’re not talking the cheap stuff you find at Wal-Mart, these are flashlights that you can freeze, drag behind a car, even shoot with a shotgun and they continue to work. These flashlights are particularly useful for construction equipment as they are bright enough to light the areas that are being worked on during the night. You can even order them online and have them shipped to you for free! Take a look at their new e-commerce website today!
I came across an astounding statistic today.
Mobile search will generate 27.8 billion more queries than desktop search by 2016. (Source: BIA/Kelsey report, 2012)
That means the searching and browsing on your laptop computer is slowly becoming a thing of the past. If people are searching and browsing on their iPads, iPhones, Galaxy S4, BlackBerry, etc… then, they’re visiting your website on those same devices. Anyone who’s ever visited a website on their mobile device knows that sites look a great deal different than they do on your desktop. With so many programming languages and resolution sizes, it’s virtually impossible to make your business website look the same on desktop computer and a mobile device. That why you have to make sure your website is compatible with mobile devices!
If you have looked into your Google Analytics reports, you can tell what percentage of visitors to your website are mobile.
Be sure to look at these reports, as they can provide great insights to the visitors of your website and if you are missing out on potential clients and customers because your website isn’t mobile-ready. If you haven’t gotten Google Analytics installed on your site, contact us today and we can help.
